Your Aging Brain and You!

by Harvey Bond
(Chicago, USA)

The number of older people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease is rapidly increasing. It seems as if the older you get, the more prone you are to losing your mind. Of course, nobody would want this for themselves.

If you are afraid to lose your memory as you age, there are things to do to avoid this problem altogether. Studies have proven that you may not be always losing your memory. What happens is you temporarily lose access to some parts of your brain.

This happens when neurons malfunction in way or another. To keep the connection strong, you have to actually think about changing your lifestyle. A good diet sharpens your memory and keeps the neuro pathways of your brain working optimally.

The right kind of foods can fuel your mind and body. You get the nutrition that you would need to keep everything working properly. You should think of your body as a machine whose parts are dependent of each other.

If one portion fails, the others could follow suit. It is this ripple effect that you have to avoid at all costs. Once you get older, the free radicals found in your brain could affect the way your neurons function and perform.

You must consider the kinds of antioxidants of the food you eat. They are important in your diet, and if you want your neurons to work well, then you better give them something to stay strong.

For ideal foods in your diet, the good kinds of fats found in fish are great for boosting memory. But more than food, you also have to think about the sleep at night.

Because your brain functions better at night, you need to give it all the rest it needs. An eight-hour sleep helps you remember the things that you’ve done and learned. When you find yourself restless at night, you may want to consider exercising.

An intense aerobic workout and a hot bath enhance the quality of your sleep because it helps relieve your body from stress.

Like your body, your brain also needs a good workout. You can get into activities such as reading and crossword puzzles. Your mind just functions better if you do something intellectually challenging. Your brain is the powerhouse of your body.

Without it, you wouldn’t be the way you are. You must also do your part to take care of it and prioritize its health.

As you age, you will also have to be more vigilant about looking out for yourself. When trying to remember something, you can increase your focus on what information you are trying to access with the use of your other senses. And if you really can't remember it, don't stress yourself out by trying too hard.

The more relaxed you are, the easier it is to remember things. Even the younger generation can be forgetful. If something escapes your memory, just know that this is normal as well.

For better recall, learn to use your imagination. Images help make the process of memorization so much easier. No matter how old you are, you will be more than capable of recalling with proper lifestyle, good habits, and most importantly, the right attitude.
