Learn How To Do Yoga At Home Start with basic yoga poses: feel the physical and mental health benefits
If you are contemplating an exercise routine then why not try yoga at home? There are plenty of resources available to guide you - DVD's, books, YouTube videos etc.
I wanted to start this page by defining yoga but finding a satisfactory definition produced as many variables as there are types of yoga! Eventually I settled on this one:-
An ancient practice for bringing body and mind into harmony using meditation, physical postures, breathing, and exercise.
There are many different branches or types of yoga. Most people starting out probably think of it as a relatively gentle form of exercise that will help them to become fitter, stronger, more toned, more flexible, and generally healthier - maybe any one or all of these! So lets keep it simple for anyone beginning yoga.
Don't be put off if you can't get your body into exactly the same positions as shown in books or videos, just do the best you can without hurting yourself.
Assuming you are considering yoga simply for the health benefits and exercise value, rather than because you are interested in the philosophy, history and specific forms, it would be helpful to do some initial research to find what best suits your fitness and personality. Initially I was completely turned off yoga by chosing the wrong type of class!
Yoga classes are available at many local gyms or studios and are good introduction, but make sure you start with a beginners or basic level class. A class should give you a good idea of whether you want to find out more and create your own yoga at home routines from books or DVD's.
The following video is a great introduction to yoga - listen closely to all the instructions and detail about the poses:-
OK, now the video has given you an inkling of some basic yoga poses so find some good books or videos and start planning your routine.
Choose a space in your home that gives you enough room to extend your arms and legs without knocking the furniture. Yoga mats are ideal because the surface isn't slippy but you can use a blanket instead and wear comfortable clothing that won't restrict your movement. That's it you are all set to go!
If you are following a routine from a book or video get acquainted with the basic yoga poses beforehand, even trying each one individually - it will help your session flow.
Practicing yoga at home has all the health benefits of a class but without the pressure of having to attend at a specific time. However, the guidance of good teacher shouldn't be underestimated!
So lets remind ourselves of the health benefits of yoga...
