What is COPD?

by Pat
(Sussex)

Hi - I saw on your FaceBook page a post about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and wonder if you can explain what it is? My partner has just been diagnosed with this and I'm really concerned as he has smoked most of his life.
Thanks for all the great info here:-)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - A Brief Explanation
by: Caroline

Wow! It seems COPD is more common that I realized! I'm in the exact same position, though my partner has other health problems too.

The simplest explanation is that it is a disease of the lungs which makes it difficult to breathe.

According to www.nhs.uk......
"Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease. People with COPD have trouble breathing in and out. This is referred to as airflow obstruction.

Breathing difficulties are caused by long-term damage to the lungs, usually because of smoking."

It affects more men than women, although the number of women affected is increasing mainly because of smoking. Over the years as smoke irritates the lungs they become damaged, and that's why it's harder to breathe. This is usually noticed when you exert yourself - running for a bus, pushing a heavy supermarket trolley or even doing household chores.

The best way to avoid COPD is never to start smoking - but if you already do, then give it up, please, and try to get your partner to give it up too. It will make a real difference to the progression of the disease!

The usual treatment for mild to moderate COPD is an inhaler, like those people with asthma use. Chest infections are more likely as the general quality of life and health gets worse.

The good thing for you and your partner is that you know there is a problem, and can do something about it, but please don't underestimate the seriousness of COPD.

Thanks for asking about this, I wish your partner well for the future.

Caroline
