What is a Colonic?

by Sue
(Yorkshire, UK)

Some of my friends have been talking about having a colonic recently and I'm embarrassed to ask them what it is. I've got some idea and have had a look at some web sites but they don't really tell me what its all about. Why do people have it and how do they feel afterward?
It would be good to hear some personal experiences.

Colonic Cleansing etc
by: Caroline

Colon cleansing, colonic hydrotherapy and colonic irrigation are all terms you might have come across, they mean approximately the same thing!

Colonic hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method for cleansing the colon of waste material by repeated, gentle flushing with water.

The colon, or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract. Its major functions are to eliminate waste and to conserve water. If waste material has remained in the colon for some time it can cause problems making us feel ill, tired or weak.

During therapy a small disposable speculum is inserted into the rectum through which warm filtered water passes into the colon. Sometimes the therapist may us massage to assist the process of elimination waste from the colon which flows out as the water goes in.

There are opposing opinions about the benefits of colon cleansing and who it is appropriate for. So it would be wise to speak with you health practitioner before having a treatment.

There are many private clinics offering the treatment. Talk with the therapist before booking a session to be sure you are comfortable with her as this is a very personal technique.
