Warm Up Exercises Prevent Injury Prepare your body for exercise
Warm up exercises should always be done before any type of exercise. Stretching the muscles increases blood flow, reduces the risk of injury and increases the enjoyment and benefit of your workout.
As trainer Steve Barrett says in this video, the purpose of a warm up is to work all the joints, increase the blood flow around the body and get some warmth into the muscles. Warm up exercises should work the whole body from top to bottom.
Warming up helps to guard against straining the muscles, tendons and ligaments - we need to protect ourselves from this as we get older and are less fit generally.
Not only does your body benefit from a warm up routine but you are also preparing yourself mentally for your work out. It's a good time to clear your mind and focus on performing the forthcoming work out exercises.
