Socializing and Healthy Aging

Socializing & Healthy Aging....recent research has revealed that while older men often succumb to depression and loneliness after the death of a spouse, older women thrive and flourish.

The reason for that is socializing and healthy aging. Women generally, are better at socializing than men but that does not mean that a man cannot learn how to socialize for healthy aging .Having someone who listens to you and with whom you can share laughter and have fun with is a way to reduce stress, limit depression and encourage healthy aging.

General Effects of Lack of Socialization

Socialization is integral to healthy aging and lack of it can have some serious effects to the mental and physical health of a person. Loneliness and isolation are products of lack of socialization and they affect a person’s self perception.

Before too long, stress ,depression and other illnesses begin to show up in the person. In some cases, the feeling of isolation has been so great that suicide was contemplated and sometimes, carried out. No good can come out of not socializing and to live a healthy lifestyle even when one is aging it is strongly encouraged that some form of socializing be carried out.

Benefits of Socialization

Socializing and healthy aging is a concept that is becoming more popular as a recent study showed that an active lifestyle could delay memory loss as one ages. It is the act of social interaction that gets you mentally engaged. Socializing can help keep many illnesses related to aging at bay, such as dementia.

Regular interaction with others can help to keep an elderly person mentally focused and alert. Depression, which has often been tied to lack of socialization, can be drastically reduced and sometimes, a little social interaction can do lots to relieve tension and stress.

How to Socialize for Healthy Aging

As obvious as it may seem, there is a need to discuss different ways of socialization. This is because lifelong habits are very difficult to break and a person who has not had a history of socializing might find socialization and healthy aging very challenging.

The first thing to note is that socialization should be introduced in small doses especially for those who are not habitually social creatures. Too much exposure at once can force such a person back into their shell.

One way that can really encourage socialization and healthy aging all at once is to join a senior fitness group at your local gym or fitness center. There are so many groups which focus on senior citizens and it is a great way to meet other seniors and even form friendship.

Another method that is not as tied to socialization and healthy aging as joining a fitness group is signing on as a volunteer. There are stories of so many seniors who have used their skill and experience to benefit their neighborhood and immediate environment.

They are usually referred to as those who are tired but not retired. You could set up a homework center or provide free piano lessons if you are good at playing the piano. Signing up as a volunteer at the local center is also a good way to socialize. Generally, giving of yourself and your time is a way to socializing and healthy aging.

Keeping up an active social lifestyle helps to keep premature aging at bay and can even contribute towards preventing early death. Socializing and healthy aging are important for living a fulfilled life.
