What is a Normal Blood Pressure Reading?
What Can We Learn From Blood Pressure Readings?
Do you know what a normal blood pressure reading is? Check almost any website or medical book and you'll see 120/80mmHg referred to as 'normal'- this is the ideal measurement for someone who is healthy. Measuring blood pressure is a simple, quick, pain free way of finding out whether you are at risk if heart disease or stroke. What is Blood Pressure? It's a term we may take for granted without any understanding of what it really means, so here we go...... This is what the Blood Pressure Association says:- When your heart beats, it pumps blood round your body to give it the energy and oxygen it needs. As the blood moves, it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your arteries (and your heart) and this may lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Why Do We Measure Blood Pressure?
It's important to have it measured because there are no obvious symptoms if you don't have a normal blood pressure reading. As you can see from above, high blood pressure or 'hypertension' can put you at serious risk of heart attacks and strokes.
In the US - "Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Over 143,579 people die each year from stroke in the United States." "Strokes can—and do—occur at ANY age. Nearly one quarter of strokes occur in people under the age of 65." www.strokecenter.org
The Numbers ExplainedBlood pressure readings are shown as two numbers -The first or top, is your systolic blood pressure. This is the pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts and is the highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats. The second or bottom number is the diastolic pressure. This is the pressure in the arteries when the heart relaxes between each heartbeat and is the lowest level your blood pressure reaches.
