Meditation for Pain Relief

by Brianna Banks
(San Antonio, Texas, USA)

The use of drugs are effective against pain in the short term, but over time can have differing side effects. A natural alternative that works better is meditation, according to a U.S. study.

A simple meditation session does wonders, as it help manage pain and reduce sensitivity to it. Researchers at the University of North Carolina - Charlotte conducted a study suggesting that an hour of meditation over a period of three days, ie 20 minutes daily, acts as an analgesic to pain.

According to the newspaper "La Stampa", the participants in this study were divided into two groups: the first practice meditation, and the second experiment with other relaxation techniques.

After analyzing the results, Dr. Fadel Zeidan, who led the study, said: "The pain decreased in subjects who participated in the experiment and have performed meditation and more than that, there was a decrease in sensitivity to pain even when they do not meditate. "

There are many forms of meditation and choose what fits best and enjoy it. It is important to not look at meditation as something you should do it again. Meditation helps as long as something is not required and is not an effort on your part.

One of the main goals of meditation is to stop your thoughts, sometimes it takes many months or even years of exercise. Should therefore be practiced regularly.

Benefits to health?

Reduce anxiety and increase immune resistance: an experiment in July 2005 at the University of Wisconsin showed that meditation reduces anxiety, increases resistance to stressful situations, ward off negative emotions and improve immunity.

Help in fighting chronic depression: John Teasdale psychiatrist noted that meditation is effective in people suffering from chronic depression, preventing depression.

Benefits on the heart: a survey conducted at Roosevelt University in 2001 shows that meditation regulates heart rate and improves the health of persons at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Help patients with serious diseases like cancer: significant improvements in health status in patients with serious diseases. It was also found that meditation prolongs life of cancer sufferers.
