How Long Does Menopause Last?

Can anyone tell me how long the menopause will last? It's a while since I last had a period (about 8 months), though they have been erratic for quite a while longer. I'm 51 and generally in good health.

The problem is I find myself getting irritable about little things that never used to bother me, and don't have much of a sex life anymore.

Is this it? Am I destined to a future of hot flushes and sleepless nights? I haven't seen my doctor because I don't think he will be very sympathetic, I'm feeling quite low and don't want to be dismissed as a neurotic woman!

Not a Straightforward Answer

Your question is one that many women would like to know the answer to, especially if they are experiencing some of the uncomfortable symptoms such as hot flushes.

Menopause is when your periods actually stop, which can only really be defined in retrospect. The time leading up to this when you can be experiencing annoying symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings, and interrupted sleep is what most people refer to as 'the change'. It's more characteristic of perimenopause - the time when hormone levels are fluctuating leading up to the menopause.

It's possible for these symptoms to last several years, and impossible to be precise as everyone's experience is individual. It will last as long as it lasts! You might have some symptoms for a short while, and yet others last for several years.

Your personal circumstances - lifestyle, diet state of health etc will all have an effect on how you experience your menopause.

If you are troubled by any of the symptoms please discuss with your medical practitioner.
