Healthy eating guidelines are important because they will help us on our way to good nutritional health, create healthy eating habits, and reduce the risk of nutrition related diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

Components of a balanced healthy diet

There are four main food groups referred to by government health departments in the United Kingdom, USA, Canada and Australia. A healthy balanced diet will include a variety of foods from each group in appropriate quantities.

  • Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and grains
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Milk and dairy products
  • Meat, fish, eggs and alternatives


Remember, these are healthy eating guidelines.
