Drinking Water To Lose Weight?
Yes - Not only will it help you lose weight but keep it off too!

Drinking water to lose weight really can help as part of a weight management plan. Studies have shown that not only will you lose weight, but will be more successful at keeping it off.

There's no magic secret to drinking water and weight loss. Water is essential for every function of the body, and to any weight management program. Just like weight loss without dieting it doesn't involve complicated diet regimes or starving yourself of regular meals. Drinking water helps you lose weight by suppressing your appetite because you feel fuller.

Benefits of Drinking Water

Water is the essence of life - we cannot live without it.

Our bodies are made up of 50-70% water and it is essential to every bodily function. If we don't drink enough we become dehydrated which can lead to.....

  • Headaches
  • Tiredness
  • Lack of concentration
  • Joint and muscle soreness
  • Water retention - the body retains fluid when it isn't getting enough to function properly

And the benefits are ....

  • No calories!
  • You feel fuller so eat less
  • Cheap and easily available
  • No side effects
  • Your skin will be hydrated, looking fresh and healthy
  • It aids digestion so you get maximum benefit of nutrients from your food
  • It doesn't harm your teeth like drinks containing sugar etc

Depending on the level of activity, on average a person needs around 2.5 litres a day, with men needing more than women. No-one actually knows the exact amount but take this and your thirst as a guide.

The colour of your urine is a good guide to whether you are drinking enough - if it's pale and straw coloured, that's fine but if it's dark yellow you probably need to drink more.

The brain can't differentiate between signals for hunger and thirst. It's more likely that when you think you are feeling hungry the body is wanting more fluids, so let your thirst guide you.

Start drinking water to lose weight by drinking little and often throughout the day. Keeping a bottle of water handy is a good idea as it also will give you a measure of how much you've drunk.

Proper water intake is the key to weight loss," says Dr. Donald Robertson, Scottsdale, Arizona. "If people who are trying to lose weight don't drink enough water, the body can't metabolize the fat, they retain fluid, which keeps their weight up, and the whole procedure we're trying to set up falls apart."

If you don't like the flavour of water try eating fruit with a high water content, or drinking fruit or herb teas. If you are following healthy eating guidelines then your diet will naturally include fruits and vegetables that are full of nutrients and have a higher water content than processed foods.
