Cool Down Exercises Are As Important As The Warm Up Cooling down should always be part of your exercise session
Cool down exercises help the heart and breathing to return normal levels after your work out or exercising. Some light activity similar to that in your exercise session, deep breathing, followed by stretching is the most beneficial.
Many people dismiss the cool down as a waste of time, but if you enjoy exercising and want to stay injury free then it's actually very important - and anyway s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g feels so good!
What are the benefits of cool down exercises?
Cooling down after exercise means that you gradually reduce the level of activity, and then stretch your muscles.
How does it help?
Your heart rate and breathing to return to normal levels.
Keeps the blood circulating bringing oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and ligaments.
Helps to remove lactic acid and other waste products from the muscles which can build up during vigorous activity.
May prevent the muscle soreness which sometimes follows exercising.
Improves the range of movement in your joints.
Allows you time to mentally unwind.
Watch the following video which stretches out the whole body. You can follow the complete routine or select parts of it that you feel apply to you. Make sure you perform the stretches to the best of your ability being careful not to do anything which hurts!
